Today is the final day of National School Counseling Week. I have enjoyed talking about perseverance this week with you. It’s a skill I practice every day and, like you, I am still learning.
In the first Iron Man movie, Tony Stark says, “Sometimes you gotta run before you can walk.” When a situation demands you perform tasks requiring more skill than you have at the moment, you may feel like you’re in over your head.
Have you heard about people who learn by doing something? That’s kind of what we’ve all been doing with virtual learning. Running before you walk means making a few mistakes, but with perseverance, you’ll be ready to get back up and try again.
I—and all of your teachers—are here to help you succeed. We know you can persevere to overcome challenges and achieve your goals. When you stumble—and you will because we all do—I will be here to help. Author F. Scott Fitzgerald said, “Never confuse a single defeat with a final defeat.” You’ve got this.
Thank you for celebrating National School Counseling Week with me. Have a safe and fun weekend!

Remember we are celebrating National School Counseling Week and as we talk about perseverance, Mrs. Wright is reminded of the need to face our fears. Sometimes, fears can be a major barrier to moving forward. We all have things we’re afraid of. Mrs. Wright does too.
In Thor: Ragnarok, Thor says, “I choose to run towards my problems and not away from them.” You don’t have to run TOWARD your problems, but you can only run away from them for so long.
Think about the fears that might be preventing you from persevering. What holds you back from achieving your goals. Fears are perfectly normal and sometimes we need help to face them. Remember that I am here for you. But if you aren’t comfortable talking to me, reach out to your friends, family or another trusted adult. Speaking your fears out loud is the first step to defeating them.

This week, we are celebrating National School Counseling Week and we’re talking about perseverance and I have always found inspiration to keep moving forward by doing something for someone else. Sometimes you just need to get out of your own head.
In the Black Panther movie, King T’Challa says “We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” Compassion is when we show care for someone else. When you’re feeling your worst, helping someone can make you feel better.
How can you help? How can you show compassion to a friend, a relative, a classmate, or a neighbor? Can you be a listening ear for a friend who is suffering? Can you reach out to an elderly relative to let them know you’re thinking about them? Can you help a classmate who is struggling with their work? I would love to hear your ideas. Reach out to me and talk!

This week we are celebrating National School Counseling Week. One of my goals is to
help you learn new skills to help you succeed. This week, we are focusing on perseverance. I know you’ve faced many challenges as our schools have moved online and in person, as you’ve missed out on time with friends and family, and as many of your regular activities were postponed or cancelled altogether. Everything is different and that’s a lot to handle. Determination is a skill that can be helpful. And, to be honest, it’s one I have to practice, too.
In Iron Man, Tony Stark said, “It’s an imperfect world but it’s the only one we got.”
Using your determination when everything feels different is hard. First you have to accept that change has happened and will happened, and you just need to find your footing and do the next right thing.
There are lots of tools to help you stay on target. Making lists and setting goals, and just taking time to process your feelings can help you keep going and stay determined.
You may not have an IronMan suit, but you always have me. I am always willing and ready to help you!

As members of the University of Georgia’s Middle School Outreach Team, we understand that a good transition from middle school to high school is critical in a student's success in the selective college admissions process. As part of our effort to increase the college readiness of Georgia's students, our team provides this newsletter to you so you can help educate parents and students about the college admissions process.
Come (virtually) visit campus: We are now offering virtual information sessions for interested students. It's never too early to expose students to the college admissions process. Please sign up a group from your school or community at visit.uga.edu today!
Why expose middle schoolers to colleges: Over the last decade, our office has hosted thousands of middle school students on campus. Many students have shared the impact that these visits had on their college search process. Here is a testimonial from a parent and student about how this exposure benefitted them.
Finding the right fit: There are many choices that students must make when creating a list of potential colleges. The College Board has a great interactive tool, found here, that helps students narrow down their list based on personal preferences. Students can also learn more through videos that accompany each question about size, cost, and majors. We recommend sharing this with parents and students, it's never too early to start thinking about what college is the right fit.

It's election day! Did you know? The United States uses a system called the electoral college to elect presidents. Under this method, the candidate with the most votes nationwide doesn't necessarily win the election. Each state is given a number of electors based on the size of its congressional delegation and the candidate who wins a majority of electors becomes president. A candidate needs to win a majority of 538 electoral votes -270- to be elected president.
When you are eligible to vote, make sure you educate yourself about both candidates and exercise your right to vote!

Happy Red Ribbon Week- DAY 5!
I hope you all are celebrating by wearing your Halloween costumes!
It has been a great week and we are thankful you have participated by dressing up this week to show your support and opposition to drugs!
As we end this week, here is something to think about in regards to drugs:
You hear all sorts of warnings about what illegal drugs and the misuse of legal drugs can do to you. You might think, “It could happen to others, but it won’t happen to me.”
But using drugs can affect your health, your family, social relationships, school performance, and your future.
Sometimes just being around people who use them can have legal, health, social, and financial consequences. Think about it: What can happen when you get in a car with a driver who is high? What can happen when you get pulled over with drugs or paraphernalia in your car?
And what can happen if you make the decision to use drugs? The first time it’s a choice. After that, it may not be. And sometimes it’s hard to know the consequences of your choice — until it’s too late.
When it comes to drugs and drug abuse, there are many realities and consequences to consider. So be brave. Be happy. Be drug free!
Have a great day!

Happy Red Ribbon Week- DAY 4!
I hope you all are celebrating by wearing your favorite team gear or colors!
Question of the day: “Can you get high off things that aren’t drugs or anything of the sort? Such as sharpies or other things with those fumes.
The answer is: Using inhalants such as spray paint, markers, sharpies, or cleaning supplies can result in nerve cells not being able to do their job which can cause loss of coordination and lead to permanent difficulty with basic actions such as walking, bending, and talking. So, things that you might not think of as drugs are still chemicals and have chemical effects on the brain and body.
Let’s all stand together to show our opposition to drugs!
Remember, tomorrow is “Don’t let drugs trick you they are not a treat!” Wear your Halloween costume, but please follow dress code. No scary, bloody, gory or inappropriate costumes will be allowed! Make sure you post a picture and tag us on FB or Instagram!

Happy Red Ribbon Week- DAY 3!
I hope you all are celebrating by dressing as a twin or multiples!
Question of the day: “Can you take drugs and still live a healthy life?
The Answer is NO! Using drugs isn’t a healthy choice. When you use drugs, you risk becoming addicted. Once you become addicted, your priorities shift and your focus is ensuring you have the drug. Once you start making those kind of choices, you become increasingly unable to make other choices that keep you healthy—like eating well, exercising and staying connected to the people in your life you value.
Let’s all stand together to show our opposition to drugs! J
Remember, tomorrow is “Team up Against Drugs!” Wear your favorite team gear or colors. School picture day is tomorrow, too! Make sure you post a picture and tag us on FB or Instagram!

Happy Red Ribbon Week- DAY 2!
I hope you all are celebrating by wearing your animal print or favorite animal costume, today!
Do you know what red ribbon week is? It is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention awareness campaign. Today, millions of people celebrate Red Ribbon Week. It was started after the death of Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent, Camarena, who was murdered by drug traffickers he was investigating in Mexico. After his death, people wanted to honor his sacrifice. Local celebrations began in California and in 1988 the National Family Partnership started the first National Red Ribbon Week.

"In the era of Covid-19, as we all try to protect our mental health and cope with uncertainty, it’s more important than ever that we be there for each other and take steps to prevent suicide. You don’t have to be a mental health professional to make a difference. There are simple things we can all do to safeguard our mental health, and you don’t have to do it alone. From learning the warning signs for suicide and what to do if you are worried someone is struggling, to advocating for smart suicide prevention legislation, to having a #RealConvo about your own or others’ mental health, to bringing education programs to your community, we can all learn new ways to help each other save lives. Together, we #KeepGoing."

In honor of national suicide prevention week, I encourage you to take part in the #BeThe1To movement! Today, you can join in by being present for someone and helping them connect to an adult for help! Please remember to reach out to your school counselor, Mrs. Wright, for more help! Individuals are more likely to have improved feelings by speaking to a trusted professional.

Today is Thoughtful Thursday! Do something today to thank someone else or make their day better. Here some amazing things I've seen people currently doing!
1. Make thank you posters for medical workers.
2. Paint kindness rocks and leave them around the neighborhood.
3. Keep it simple, offer to do someone else’s chore or cook dinner for the family.
There is inspiration to be found everywhere if you look for it. Let the kindness of others inspire you to do something kind!

It’s been shown that if you write down three good things that happen to you everyday, your happiness and positivity increase. Three Good Things, a happiness journal app, enables you to do exactly that with a simple user-interface and gamification to encourage engagement.
In the world today, society tends to focus on the negative. Rather than remembering all of the good things in their lives, people often focus on the things which they don’t like. With Three Good Things, you can rewire your brain to focus on the positive by writing down good things that happen to you everyday. By finding positive things that happen in your daily life, you train your mind to notice the good things in life instead of allowing it to focus on the negative.

Please stay safe all veterans rangers. Make sure you stay weather aware! I have a challenge for you... spend 30 minutes-1 hr today doing something you enjoy. Self-care is so important during this time because you need to take care of yourself to be the best version of YOU!
If you need help with this, don't hesitate to send me an email at [email protected]
